Flight Gallery Installation, Cambridge
Architectural suspended paper art installation, expressing the beauty and elegance of a bird’s flight pattern captured in a single sequence.
The installation evokes a sense of tranquillity, your eye following the arrangement across the elevation in undulating form, to determine the journey between start and finish. The interactive view gives a varied snapshot of a flock in motion.
The work is made from several hundred origami paper birds, handmade and folded in regimental form, each connected to a single wire and set out on a grid formation. The wire is then suspended from mesh panels, hung on a timber frame, acting as the main support. The frame and mesh are painted black to blend in with the industrial background with the white birds forming a striking contrast leading the viewers eye into the artwork. The mesh is made in panels and can be easily demounted and reassembled in various locations to reduce the amount of tangled wires during installation.
The sculpture sits poised in a studio space artificially lit to create depth, rhythm and shadow. It encapsulates motion, enticing the viewer to explore a range of fluid shapes when viewed at varied angles.
